Researchers mention that Bab El Marsa is a historical landmark mentioned in the books of travelers, and Bonneau Fernand described it as one of the most important defensive achievements of Sultan Mohammed bin Abdullah (1757-1790). It is characterized by a unique beauty that appears in crowning the city's port with a main entrance, making it a gate that is unique in its specificity, different from the gates of other Moroccan cities. The culture of building gates has also been known for centuries in the architecture that distinguishes Morocco and shows its authenticity and splendor.

يذكر الباحثون أن «باب المرسى» معلمة تاريخية ذُكرت في كتب الرحالة، وقد وصفها بونو فرنان من أهم الإنجازات الدفاعية للسلطان محمد بن عبد الله (1757- 1790)، تتميز بجمالية فريدة تظهر في تتويج ميناء المدينة بمدخل رئيس، وتجعل منه باباً ينفرد بخصوصية تختلف عن أبواب مدن المغرب الأخرى. كما أن ثقافة تشييد الأبواب معروفة منذ قرون في الهندسة المعمارية التي تميز المغرب وتُظهر أصالته ورونقه.
